Recommendations before swab collection:
Proper preparation before swab collection minimizes the chance of the inconclusive or non-diagnostic test result.
The Real-Time PCR test uses genetic material taken by a swab from both your nose and your throat. You will find some recommendations on how to prepare prior to taking the test down below:
Throat swab should be taken in the morning, after gargling your throat with boiled water (after it cools down). If this is not possible, the swab should be taken about 3 hours after the last meal. Before swab collecting do not brush your teeth, use mouthwashes, take throat lozenges nor chew mint chewing gums. Removable dentures should also be removed before the swab collection.
The nasal swab should be taken 2 hours after the last injection of intranasal antimicrobial agents (drops, ointments, sprays). Do not rinse or blow your nose before collecting the material.
If you decide to take an antigen test, the tested material is a swab taken from your upper respiratory tract. It should be taken in an acute phase of the infection, at least two hours apart from injecting of internasal antimicrobial agents (drops, ointments, sprays). Do not rinse or blow your nose prior to the collecting of the material.
All visitors whose intention is to take a test are asked to wear proper face cover and have an ID on them. Additionally, patients with a referral from NFZ (National Health Fund) are asked to prepare a referral number.
Results waiting time:
Results of the Real-Time PCR test will be available in 24h after the samples get to the lab. Keep in mind that the samples do not go to the lab immediately, they are usually delivered in late evening, thus the results should be expected the next day in the evening at latest.
Results of the antigen test will be available in 3h after the samples get to the lab. Keep in mind that the samples do not go to the lab immediately, they are usually delivered in late evening, thus the results should be expected the same day around midnight.
How to read the results:
POSITIVE results mean detection of genetic material of SARS-CoV-2 virus.
NEGATIVE results mean that the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus wasn’t detected.
INCONCLUSIVE results mean insufficient quantity of genetic material of SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is recommended to repeat the test (including swab collection) in 24h-48h after the first test. If the viral load changes (increases or decreases), it makes it possible to clearly determine the presence or absence of the genetic material or the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
According to the NIPH-PZH recommendations in the field of molecular diagnostics of SARS-CoV-2, getting an inconclusive result cannot be interpreted as a performance error on the side of the lab. All actions to pressure and speed up getting the final results are unacceptable and violate laboratory diagnostician’s statutory rights. https://www.pzh.gov.pl/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Rekomendacje-w-zakresie-diagnostyki-molekularnej-SARS-CoV-2.pdf.
NON-DIAGNOSTIC results, which indicates lack of signal to the Internal Control may indicate presence of reaction inhibitors (unusable sample). In this case, retaking a test is necessary, and paying extra attention to the “Recommendations before taking the test” is advised.
