How to prepare for a COVID-19 swab?

It is very important to remember a few important rules before taking a test. Well, a throat swab should be taken at least 3 hours after the last meal. Before collecting the material, do not brush your teeth, use mouthwashes, lozenges or chewing gums. Nasal and nasopharyngeal swabs, on the other hand, should be taken at least 2 hours apart from the administration of intranasal antimicrobial agents (drops, ointments, sprays). Also, do not rinse or blow your nose before collecting the material.

Such preparation for smear collection prevents obtaining a possible non-diagnostic result. A non-diagnostic result means that the sample contains reaction inhibitors (molecules) that prevent the identification of the pathogen. Such “blockers” can include, for example, food, drink, and even certain drugs. Therefore, if the above recommendations were followed, and the result turned out to be non-diagnostic, it is worth consulting a doctor in order to exclude potential obstacles in the next examination.
