Gastrointestinal infections tests identify genetic material of clinically relevant pathogens that lead to gastrointestinal infections often accompanied by diarrhoea.
Such infections may be caused by a range of bacterial, viral or parasite pathogens. Diagnosing the root cause correctly based solely on clinical parameters is often difficult. This is why it is required to confirm the diagnosis with lab tests. Traditional lab testing using standard microbiological methods is often not sensitive enough, results take a long time to obtain and it is not possible to identify viruses and some bacteria. Moreover, identifying bacteria should not exclude testing for viral or parasite infections as there is a risk of coinfections. Molecular tests that we offer identify a wide range of pathogens resulting in gastrointestinal infections all in one test.
In addition to gastrointestinal infections, we can also test for gastrointestinal parasites, such as flatworms, nematodes and microsporidia. It is difficult to correctly diagnose the root causes of gastrointestinal infections because symptoms are often similar. Identifying the right pathogen correctly is important when deciding on treatment. The traditional approach based on identifying gastrointestinal endoparasites using microscope screening is time-consuming and often results in errors.
Our service identifies all pathogen DNA/RNA in one test which makes it much quicker. The Real-Time PCR technology is very sensitive and identifies parasites even at low infection levels often below the thresholds of standard microscope tests.
Stool samples are required for this test.
